Why Ford Maverick Outpaced Ford Ranger

Ford Maverick outsold its elder brother, Ford Ranger, in the first half of this year.

The Ford Maverick is one of the TOP 20 fastest-selling vehicles on sale today. The Maverick Hybrid is especially popular. The compact pickup proved to be a red-hot commodity since its launch in 2021.

From January to June 2022, Ford sold 38,753 Maverick pickups in the USA, while sales of the Ranger in the same period accounted for 33,840 units. So, as we can see, the compact Maverick outsold the mid-size Ranger with a significant margin of 4,913 vehicles.

This result may be surprising because Americans traditionally prefer bigger vehicles, but there are some reasons why the Ford Maverick turned out to be more preferable than the Ranger.

First, the Maverick pickup is a brand new product. The Blue Oval seems to be more devoted to the Maverick, and attracted public attention to it, fueling interest, even before the small pickup was released to the market.

The Ranger you can purchase today is aged compared to newer products, and the next-gen model will most likely reach the U.S. market only in 2023.

Second, the Maverick is cheaper – its starting price is $5,000 less than the Ranger. It is also more fuel efficient: the rating of the Maverick hybrid is up to 42 mpg on the highway. This also matters.

While the unibody Ford Maverick is a more enjoyable choice for everyday driving with a fresher interior design, smoother ride, and sharper handling, the body-on-frame Ranger is a real workhorse. The latter offers higher payload and towing capacities, longer beds (5- and 6-foot ones), and definitely greater off-road ability.
