The latest-generation Chevrolet Equinox is strengthening its position in the compact SUV segment of the US car market. It is included in the TOP 5 best-sellers of this niche with good dynamics of consumer demand growth. What is attractive in the model for Americans? CARGlancer has tried to find out.
The third-generation Chevy Equinox, judging by its sales, has become the most commercially successful. The compact SUV is one of the TOP 5 best-sellers in its class today, it comes after the Japanese Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V.
The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox price in the US starts at $24,995. It is, rather, the average in the class.
What do buyers get for this money? – Many things, in particular a remote start, a push-button engine start, Chevrolet’s multimedia system, a rear-view camera, active noise reduction, power windows, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch wheels already in standard.
Variety of versions
There are 4 trim levels, 8 front-wheel-drive and 8 all-wheel-drive variants. So, many choices are available.
Turbocharged diesel motor
The Chevy Equinox buyers can select from three engines, one of which is diesel:
- 1.5-liter 170-hp turbo gasoline (203lb-ft of torque), 6-speed automatic transmission;
- 2.0-liter 252-hp turbo gasoline (260lb-ft), 9-speed AT;
- 1.6-liter 137-hp I4 turbo diesel (240lb-ft), 6-speed AT.
It is the diesel version that can attract attention of customers liking outdoor activities. Such a car copes well with towing not only a camper, but a small boat too. However, in 2020, as confirmed by GM, the diesel Equinox will lose the version.
Modern safety systems
The Equinox is marketed with a wide range of safety systems including collision warning, around view camera, automatic braking, active lane keep assist, blind spot monitor.
That is, the growing popularity of the Chevy Equinox does not cause much surprise. It is good and simple in terms of design, offers a wide range of equipment options.
We can add that in 2020 Chevrolet will present its new compact SUV named Trailblazer.
It will sit between the Trax and Equinox, but has as standard such functions as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, front pedestrian braking, adaptive cruise control, rear parking assistance and a high-resolution rear-view camera.
Now these systems are available only for range-topping cars.
