Kia’s first battery electric vehicle on the all-new dedicated architecture – the EV6 – will be launched in selected markets from the 2nd half of 2021. Online reservations begin from today.
The new Korea-built model marks the transition of the brand to a new electrification era under a new slogan, ‘Movement that inspires’. The car is part of the plan to introduce 11 new BEV models by 2026: 7 on the all-new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), including the EV6, and 4 derivatives on the basis of existing models.
Kia has just debuted the EV6.
Let’s pick out the highlights.
Versatility and Spaciousness
The vehicle is practical and roomy inside thanks to a flat battery under the floor. The wheelbase of 2,900 mm results in a cabin space similar to midsize SUVs.
The Kia EV6 offers intelligent and flexible interior packaging and many storage areas, like a 520-liter trunk (18.4 cubic feet). When the 2nd-row seats are folded down, stowage capacity increases to 1,300 liters (45.9 cubic feet). A frunk provides additional 52 liters (1.8 cubic feet) on 2WD models and 20 liters (0.7 cubic feet) on AWD cars.
Interior ‘goodies’ include a seamless high-tech curved infotainment screen and relaxation seats. They are slim, lightweight, upholstered in robust fabrics of recycled plastics equivalent to 111 plastic water bottles.
Electric Power
The Kia EV6 offers a choice of powertrain configurations. It comes either with a 77.4-kWh long-range or a 58.0-kWh standard-range high-voltage battery packs, a two-wheel drive, or an all-wheel drive. There are warm GT-Line and hot GT versions.
The 58.0-kWh battery pack is available with a 125-kW electric motor powering the rear wheels or a 173-kW electric motor sending power to the front and rear wheels. Similarly, the 77.4-kWh battery pack is paired with a 168-kW motor and 2WD or a 239-kW motor and AWD.
The car achieves a driving range of over 510 km on a single charge, max. torque is 605 Nm (446 lb-ft). The fasters EV6 GT version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 260 km/h (161.5 mph).
Fast Charging
The Kia EV6 offers 800- and 400-volt charging capabilities. An 80 percent charge is possible in just 18 minutes. A top-up charge of 100-km range takes less than 4.5 minutes (for 2WD, 77.4-kWh variant).
The EV6’s Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) enables a new vehicle-to-load (V2L) function – it can discharge energy from the car’s battery, supplies up to 3.6 kW of power. This system is capable of operating simultaneously a 55-inch TV and air conditioner for more than 24 hours, or of charging another EV.
With more than 35 percent charge left in the battery, the EV6 can tow up to 1,600 kg (3,527 lb). Together with the V2L function, the EV6 owners can take all they need on an outdoor adventure.
Technologies
The EV6 is fitted with energy-recuperation tech to maximize driving range. The vehicle’s latest-gen smart regenerative braking system provides six regenerative braking levels.
The model introduces a suite of technologies to enhance safety, connectivity, and infotainment. They include the high-tech infotainment system with 12-inch dual screens, an augmented reality (AR) head-up display system, the latest ‘Kia Connect’, a powerful 14-speaker Meridian surround audio system.
Among the advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) of the car, there are such functions as Safe Exit Assist, Lane Following Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.
