What Is Tesla Cybertruck’s “Boat Mode” and What It Gives

The manufacturer plans “Boat Mode” for the Tesla Cybertruck that allows seafaring. Is it really possible to turn a vehicle into a boat in this case?

The Tesla Cybertruck is like a mystery box: it never ceases to amaze even before it hits the market. One of Elon Musk’s ideas is the Cybertruck’s ability to sail, so to speak. We can’t really imagine the electric pickup moving through the water like a normal boat.

Nevertheless, Tesla’s CEO once announced that the Cybertruck would be able to cross the channel from Starbase to San Padre Island going faster than a few knots. However, the channel is about 477 meters only…

Musk says an electric propeller is necessary for this purpose to mount it on the tow hitch for the Cybertruck’s quick moving. A creative wheel hub design may be used to generate meaningful thrust.

The idea of the so-called “Boat Mode” seems to be quite feasible, according to Teslarati, but will involve many works on the part of Tesla. The Cybertruck should be heavy and waterproof enough, plus designing the propeller capable to push the vehicle on the water will likely be a challenge.

Besides, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources has already clearly warned that vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck shouldn’t be used as boats.

The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019 and since then its market launch has been constantly delayed. Its mass production should start by the end of next year, and the model will be a different vehicle – not the one unveiled 3 years ago, and more expensive (over $50K) in addition.
