Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle, the Solterra SUV, will go on sale in 2022. What else do we know about the iconic new model?
Subaru is in no hurry to reveal all the details about its first all-electric car. The automaker published the first teasers, explained the origin of the name of the new EV, and informed of the approximate date of its release on the market.
In a press release, Subaru explains that Solterra is a composite name from two Latin words – “Sol” and “Terra” (“Sun” and “Earth”). Not very fresh, although romantic.
The Subaru Solterra EV is built on an all-new global platform e-Subaru, which means the crossover is only the first in the brand’s electric lineup.
Interestingly, until today, Subaru had no hybrids, no pure electric cars in its portfolio. The announcement about the Solterra market entry has come as a bit of a surprise.
We don’t know now to what extent Toyota took part as a partner in the development of the architecture the Solterra rides on, but the same platform forms the basis for the all-new Toyota bZ4X model. Subaru is a newcomer to the electric vehicle market; Toyota, on the other hand, has a lot of experience.
As for the technical characteristics of the Subaru e-crossover, there is very little data so far. Four-wheel drive, of course, will be. Perhaps, the Solterra will be in the same market niche of compact SUVs as the bZ4X.
The Toyota bZ4X’s price starts from $37,000. Subaru’s new model will likely cost plus-minus the same. Subaru claims the new Solterra will go on sale in 2022.
