Volvo C40 Recharge: Answers To Key Questions

Volvo has answered a number of questions from potential buyers on the official page of the latest product – the C40 Recharge electric crossover. No talks about the price yet.

As at the official premiere of the C40 Recharge, the Swedish company is in no hurry to unveil the complete info about the newcomer.

For example, when asked about the availability to purchase, Volvo replied “Soon”. The C40 Recharge is designed and will be sold only as a pure electric vehicle.

Another interesting question is “What is the driving range on a single charge?” Volvo claims it reaches 420 km (261 mi) in mixed traffic.

However, the actual distance also depends on driving style and other circumstances, such as outside temperature, weather, wind, topography, road conditions, as well as energy costs for heating and cooling the vehicle.

The range is rated according to the WLTP and EPA cycles under controlled conditions for a new car. Naturally, the real range may differ.

The next question is about long-distance travel. Volvo says the C40 Recharge battery can be charged at both AC and DC fast-charging stations. In just 40 minutes, the battery can be charged from 0 to 80%.

10 minutes of charging (equals a time for drinking a cup of coffee) is enough for 80-100 km (50-62 miles).

For regular charging at home, the automaker recommends a 3-phase 11 kW wall box. This system will fully charge the battery in 8 hours. This approach will significantly save money if you connect at night.

Volvo Cars’ warranty on the battery is 8 years or 160,000 km (99,419 miles), provided you maintain and use the vehicle and battery in accordance with Volvo’s recommendations.

A question about maintenance is worth noting too. The C40’s motors are sealed for life and require no maintenance. This can lead to lower operating costs.

And finally, there are two questions about practicality, namely the boot volume and towing capacity.

The rear cargo compartment is 413 liters (14.585 cubic feet). Not so much. The battery, the company admits, hides space. However, this is largely offset by the front cargo compartment. There is room under the hood for charging cables and other items, which are not often needed.

In terms of towing, the Volvo C40 Recharge can tow up to 1,500 kg (3,307 pounds): it’s rather good for a compact crossover.
