Volkswagen Atlas Will Get a Big Electric Sibling

A full-size SUV with an ID nameplate will join Volkswagen’s electric lineup.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess has announced the development of an all-electric large crossover when speaking of the company’s plans. Thus, the automaker has been actively increasing its ID range.

Presumably, the future SUV will receive an ID.8 marking and will be commensurate with the Volkswagen Atlas. If the automaker’s plans come true, the Volkswagen ID.8 could become the first all-electric representative in the large crossover niche.

Earlier, Volvo announced that a successor to the XC90 flagship will be fully electric and even get a new name. However, Volkswagen is a mainstream brand, which means the ID.8 will be likely more affordable than the large Swedish SUV.

Since Atlas is developed for the USA, we can assume its big electric sibling will also target the American market. However, you shouldn’t forget about China either.

At the moment, Volkswagen’s model range includes two all-electric vehicles on the MEB platform. We are talking about the ID.3 hatchback and the ID.4 crossover. The latter is on sale in the United States and starts at $39,995. This, by the way, is a third cheaper than the Volvo C40 Recharge which is already available to order.

Why do we think the Volkswagen ID.8 will target the U.S. in the first place? Because here the demand for large crossovers has been growing steadily, on the one hand, and manufacturers increasingly strive to electrify their vehicles, on the other hand. The trend towards ‘green’ cars is observed even in the segment of pickups, which are so popular in the country.

Americans accepted the Volkswagen Atlas relatively well, although it could not become a best-seller. We believe the large Volkswagen ID.8 has good chances in North America too.
