The new Volkswagen Golf R flagship is the most powerful ever Golf model.
The original version of the sports car debuted in 2002 as the all-wheel-drive 238-hp (177-kW) Golf R32. It was the first Volkswagen that received a dual clutch gearbox in 2003.
The 2021 model is more powerful, dynamic, efficient, integrated and more digital than before. It offers optimum traction, neutral and precise handling, and maximum agility.
The world premiere of the new eight-generation VW Gold R will take place in two days, on November 4, 2020. A day after, presales will begin in Germany and other European markets.
The newcomer joins already unveiled GTI, GTI Clubsport, GTE and GTD versions of the brand’s all-time bestseller. Volkwagen produces it at it ‘home’ Wolfsburg plant.
One of the highlights of the new Golf R is its advanced all-wheel drive system with selective wheel torque control on the rear axle. A Vehicle Dynamics Manager controls the drive. It is closely integrated with other running gear systems – an electronic front differential lock and an adaptive chassis control DCC.
A 2.0-liter turbo-four direct-injection engine with 221 kW (296 hp) is available for the new Volkswagen Golf R. It is the most powerful and hi-tech variant of the EA 888 engine series.
In the USA, customers can currently buy the Golf and Golf GTI hatchbacks. Their base 2020 prices (excl. destination title, taxes, dealer charges) are $23,195 and $28,595, respectively. Those are the prices for a 1.4L TSI Golf and a 2.0L Turbo Golf GTI, both with a six-speed manual transmission.
UPDATE 11/04/20: The Volkswagen Golf Mk8 R hatchback will reach U.S. shores in late 2021. It will be available in a sole fully equipped trim level. Expect the price starts from $40,000.
