Volkswagen Creates A Budget Pickup For Brazilian Market
Volkswagen has been developing a budget compact pickup for Brazil: a sketch is available. Will it ever get to other markets?
The public will be able to see a concept vehicle soon, In November 6, at the São Paulo International Motor Show. The company has already decided on the production of the new model.
Like its main rivals, the Fiat Toro and Renault Duster Oroch, the new Volkswagen pickup truck will be designed for the Brazilian market. The name of the model is not unveiled yet. Insiders suggest it will be called the Volkswagen Tarok.
The new pickup will be positioned below the larger VW Amarok and above the Saveiro in the model range of the brand. It is expected to be considerably cheaper than the Amarok.
The vehicle is built on the small A0 variant of the MQB platform. It is a four-door and four-wheel drive modification. No powertrain details are offered for now, but we expect a 1.4-liter 150-hp TSI motor.
Volkswagen should put the pickup into production late 2019 – early 2020. After arrival to Brazil, it then may come to other markets. If the VW model reaches the US car market, it’ll likely be too expensive to compete with other offers there due to a high (25%) tariff on imported pickups.
