Updated 2022 Mercedes GLE Spied on Tests in Northern Europe

New spy photos from Northern Europe show both exterior and interior details of the restyled 2022 Mercedes GLE crossover which, in addition, comes with a hybrid powertrain.

Spanish media motor.es has published a series of images of a pre-production prototype of the 2022 Mercedes GLE PHEV. In preparation for manufacture, the crossover is being tested in the harsh climatic conditions of Northern Europe near the Arctic Circle.

As typical for a facelift, the exterior changes are evolutionary and correspond to the design of Mercedes-Benz’s latest models. There is a new steering wheel with elegant black spokes in the cabin. The MBUX infotainment system will get the newest software.

The 2022 Mercedes GLE PHEV goes on sale at the same time as the regular gasoline (petrol) and diesel versions, which are slated for mid-2022. The brand will add a 48-volt MHEV technology to all internal combustion engines.

As for the future of the GLE PHEV, it is uncertain. Actually, Europeans are losing interest in plug-in hybrid vehicles – either compact or large ones.

Customers prefer full electric vehicles or conventional hybrids with small, lightweight batteries. However, Mercedes has been already developing the EQE – a 100% electric crossover commensurate with the GLE. Its prospects seem better, at least in Europe.
