Toyota Yaris Hatch Debuted: On Sale In 2020, To Be Made In USA

Toyota presented the Toyota Yaris hatchback at the New York International Auto Show. It is a rebadged Mazda 2 for the US car market. On sale – in 2020.

The Toyota Yaris made its debut in New York this month. It won’t reach Europe, but American buyers see it in showrooms next year, with a 36-month/36,000 mile warranty, by the way.

The newcomer looks almost identical to the Mazda 2 which was on sale in the USA since 2015. There are some exterior differences, but not evident. They affected a front bumper, a grille, headlights and a ‘shark fin’ aerial which were updated.

Inside the Yaris also copies the Mazda 2 (except for a steering wheel). Infotainment, upholstery, controls and switches are the same. It’s logical the motor range will carry over from the Mazda 2.

At least it concerns a 115-hp 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine similar to Mazda’s SkyActiv-G.

As for transmission, a 6-speed torque converter automatic one replaces a 6-speed manual. Two trim levels will be available at start: a base LE and a range-topping XLE with more upscale interior.

The 2020 Toyota Yaris will be produced at a joint-venture plant in Huntsville (Alabama, USA), where the popular Toyota Corolla and Mazda CX-3 also roll off the assembly line.

It is too early to speak of the prices, we’ll know them later. The 2019 Yaris sedan starts from $15,450 in the United States.
