The all-new, third-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra has formed the basis for two exclusive pickup concepts which the automaker displays at the 2021 SEMA Show.
The first concept, Toyota Tundra TRD Desert Chase SEMA, is developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) team as a chase support vehicle for desert rallies. Off-road races usually take place in the remote wilderness, so any support other than the driver and co-driver is led by a support team. These support vehicles are a vital part of competitions, without exaggeration.
The TRD Desert Chase Tundra is based on the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro featuring a new hybrid powertrain. An i-FORCE MAX 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine pairs an electric motor sitting between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. This tandem makes 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft. At the same time, the maximum torque is already available at 2400 rpm.
The concept gets a special long-travel suspension, specific 18-inch wheels of forged aluminum from Method Race Wheels. In addition, the package includes 37-inch General Tire Grabber X3 all-terrain tires.
The TRD Desert Chase Tundra also receives a set of rear and side facing lights, a special roll bar, a dedicated off-road jack, a carbon dioxide tank, fuel and water containers, and other support vehicle equipment.
The second prototype, the Tundra Lifted SEMA Concept, showcases a new 3-inch lift kit. Toyota will eventually offer it at dealerships across the country.
Unlike the first concept, the Tundra Lifted with the TRD Off Road package is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
The TRD Off Road package provides many off-road enhancements such as Multi-Terrain Select, CRAWL Control which functions as a low-speed cruise control with five selectable speeds, Downhill Assist control and an electronic rear differential lock.
The Tundra Lifted features a new TRD lift kit that provides 2.6-inch additional ground clearance and increases the entry, exit and side-tilt angles by 5, 1 and 2 degrees, respectively.
Other accessories include a TRD skid plate, die-cast aluminum footrests, bed extension, dashcam, two folding bed storage boxes, a Tundra mat, a folding hard tarpaulin, a TRD Off-Road wheel and black eyelet tire set, and even a console safe.
