In a recent teaser video, the two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has announced a newly developed 2.8-liter engine on the facelifted Toyota Hilux.
Toyota scheduled to unveil the model in full later this week. The company upgraded the mill and revised suspension geometry for the 2021 Hilux.
It made significant updates of the exterior design, including fresh alloy wheels, new lights and colors. The pickup truck now acquires a Tacoma-inspired appearance.
The flagship 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel becomes more powerful for 2021. Currently it generates 174 hp (130 kW) and 332 lb-ft with the automatic gearbox, and 310 lb-ft with the manual one.
The carmaker introduced this engine in 2015, when it replaced a less potent 3.0-liter unit.
A hot version – the Toyota GR Hilux – with a powerful 6-cylinder diesel is possibly underway as well.
The Toyota Hilux is a popular global model which is in its eighth generation now. It has the reputation of the vehicle with a high level of durability and reliability during sustained heavy use or even abuse.
The Hilux is a repeated record breaker and the Dakar Rally participant, a popular model among militant groups in war-torn regions.
In the USA, the Hilux was replaced by the Toyota Tacoma in 1995, and since hasn’t been available there. The 2020 Tacoma starts at $26,050.
