A full-size three-row Volkswagen Atlas SUV will have a “younger brother” – a two-row version of the model, which was presented last year as the Atlas Cross Sport Concept.
VW Atlas with two rows of seats, designed for the Chinese market, debuted in April at the Auto Shanghai 2019. It is known as the Teramont X (the regular 3-row Atlas is called the Teramont) in China.
North American versions are undergoing road tests. Recently, a test prototype has caught the eye of car paparazzi. Looking at the already-known Teramont X, we can assume what the camouflage hides.
The US version is likely to be called the Atlas Cross Sport, as last year’s concept, or simply the Atlas Sport. However, in contrast to the quite elegant concept, the production vehicle may be less stylish, albeit not as cumbersome as the 3-row Atlas.
The 2-row Volkswagen Atlas will likely inherit its powertrains from the larger sybling. It’s about a 2.0-liter turbo-four with a capacity of 238 hp, as well as a 6-cylinder 280-hp engine of 3.6 liters. A hybrid version is also expected.
This year, the new product will be launched into production at the brand’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It will enter the North American market as a 2020 model.
When arrives, the SUV will compete with the Ford Edge, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Blazer.
