The new Volkswagen T-Cross will be beneath the T-Roc, Tiguan and Touareg in the VW’s SUV lineup. It is built on a platform that allows the plug-in hybrid powertrain. This is a potential rival to the Citroen C3 Aircross, Nissan Juke, DS 3 Crossback, Suzuki Jimny, Mercedes GLA, Skoda Karoq.
The newcomer debuts in the fall of 2018 at the Paris Motor Show. It will help lowering the VW’s price point by introducing cheaper running costs and style-focused design.
On the official design sketch we can see a cluster of lamps extended along all the width of the trunk lid. The proportions on the sketch are slightly exaggerated, while recent spy shots showed a more restrained style of the showroom model.
The T-Cross is based on the all-new Volkswagen Polo, but with a greater emphasis on practicality. It is taller than its in-house rival SEAT Arona. The small crossover is built on the MQB platform, the same as for the Polo and Passat. This means it will get a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, as well as plug-in hybrid technology.
The base will be a new Volkswagen’s 3-cylinder 1.0-liter petrol motor with a turbocharger, with capacity from 76 to 117 hp. The 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions will be offered in the standard, the higher trim levels will include a dual-clutch automatic transmission gearbox.
The 4Motion all-wheel drive is not expected on the T-Cross due to its high cost. The GTI version with a new 2.0-liter turbo engine of 200 hp (the same as on the latest VW Polo GTI) is not excluded.
