While exterior updates are slight, the interior looks noticeably changed. Moreover, the Model S Plaid with up to 520-mile range is expected.
A yoke-style steering wheel is the new interior’s highlight. For those who are used to a regular round steering wheel with spokes, this new one may seem a little dissonant.
Tesla also adds a ‘goodie’ for entertainment of rear passengers – a tiny screen in the center console, probably for watching films or playing games. The same updates have been made in the new Model X.
In addition, the automaker upgrades the powertrain, battery pack and battery module, as well as drive units of the Model S lineup.
According to Elon Musk’s latest post on Twitter, the Tesla Model S Plaid “ships next month”, though Tesla’s website notes that the Plaid with 1020-hp and a 390-mile range should be available in March 2021.
The 1100-hp Plaid+ modification is expected in late 2021. It targets a 520-mile driving range and accelerates from zero to 60 mph faster than two seconds.
The Model S Long Range with 412 miles of range arrives this March too. The new Tesla Model X goes on sale in April.
Initially Tesla developed its Plaid powertrain with 3 motors for the Model S sedan, but it dropped straight into the Model X crossover, as both vehicles share the same basic platform.
The Tesla Model X Plaid has an output of 1006 hp – enough to speed up from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 163 mph. The carmaker says the new flagship covers 340 miles between charges.
