The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is seemingly a new special edition added by the Blue Oval to the current model lineup.
In early June, Ford provided some teasers of a new signature Mustang Black Accent Package and asked fans to give a name to it. Looks like the name has been found – it is ‘Dark Horse’, and if the insider info of Carbuzz is confirmed, it will be the appearance-focused special edition to the outgoing generation Ford Mustang S550. Recently Ford filed a proper trademark application with EUIPO (the European Union Intellectual Property Office).
The Ford Mustang Dark Horse will feature black-painted aluminum wheels, a satin-black badge with tiny chrome accents, and a number of other dark details. Black suits the Mustang: makes the pony car elegant and a little sinister.
Carbuzz predicts the Dark Horse Edition will arrive next year prior to the debut of the next-generation S650 Mustang that we expect to happen in mid-spring 2023.
If you delve into the history of Ford’s iconic sports car, it turns out that the Mustang already had a Dark Horse version, so this name is not unique for the model.
A product of Saleen Automotive, the Dark Horse Mustang was a limited-run black-painted version with a shaker hood (only 25-30 cars) based on the S320 Extreme Saleen Mustang. The company sold it in 2009.
It had unique exterior and interior features, like Flat Black Exterior graphics and Sport leather seats with Alcantara inserts. Saleen specially designed an engine for the vehicle – a robust 302-in3 unit capable to deliver 620 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque.
The Mustang Dark Horse was an expensive offering priced around $89,000. As for the new Ford Mustang Dark House Special Edition, it’s hard to say now how much it might cost.
