Smart’s next vehicle codenamed ‘HY11’ will be an electric SUV longer than 4,500 mm, and it’s very far from those tiny cars the brand gained recognition for.
Since the Smart brand became owned by two – Mercedez-Benz and Geely in 2019, it has gone all-electric and no longer produces clunky, funny minicars. Today’s Smart expands its range to the higher, more demanded family car segment. The next, larger Smart model is around the corner, Caradisiac reports.
The upcoming SUV’s length exceeds 4,500 mm. It sits on Geely’s SEA2 platform (Sustainable Experience Architecture) shared with the Volvo EX30 and other Smarts of the new Geely era: a 4,270 mm long Smart #1 urban crossover and a Smart #3 compact crossover SUV as long as 4,400 mm.
The future Smart model, possibly under the “#4” or “#5” name, debuts this year. It is coming to challenge such vehicles as the Volkswagen ID.4, Peugeot E-3008, or Renault Scénic E-Tech.
What about those old, Daimler-Benz-built Smarts: ForTwo, ForFour, Roadster? – They’ve gone. The only versions available for sale are the Smart EQ Fortwo and Smart EQ Fortwo Cabrio.
