Refreshed Chevrolet Silverado HD Lands as a 2024 Model: What’s New?

2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD

The carmaker is going to introduce the refreshed Chevrolet Silverado HD, including a new ZR2 version, for the 2024 model year. Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.

The current 4th– generation Chevrolet Silverado HD (heavy duty) is available in 2500HD and 3500HD forms. While a smaller most popular ‘brother’ – Silverado 1500 – got updates for the 2022 model year, the Silverado HD is somewhat behind with refresh due to complications caused by the COVID-19.

Should You Buy a Silverado HD?

Yes, if you need a powerful workhorse or a family vehicle to haul a recreational vehicle (RV). Look at the truck’s payload and towing figures, they are more than decent:

  • 2500HD – 18,500 pounds (8,392 kg) and 3,862 pounds (1,752 kg) towing/payload;
  • 3500HD – 35,500 pounds (16,103 kg) and 7,442 pounds (3,378 kg) towing/payload.

If you are in the market for a new full-size RV, then you’ll need a truck like this for pulling.

Moreover, the Chevrolet Silverado HD features advanced trailering tech including a 15-view trailering camera system, plus a number of handy features, such as integrated bed steps and options for massive beds.

The truck offers plenty of power, snappy acceleration, a spacious cabin with plenty of storage areas, an abundance of standard equipment for a work truck, and a ‘must-have’ Z71 Off-Road package.

Its weak points include mediocre forward visibility hindered by the hood, the high cost (almost $10K) of its diesel engine, and low fuel efficiency numbers.

Available spy photos show that the model undergoes comprehensive changes. On the exterior side, there will be a revised lightning pack with new LED lighting signatures, a restyled grille, and a new multi-spoke wheel design.

The upcoming Silverado HD will have a fully overhauled interior, as reported by GM Authority. A column-mounted shifter mechanism goes away, but a far larger, horizontally oriented infotainment screen appears.

Interior updates include tall, vertically oriented HVAC vents with horizontal slats and a polished trim surround placed to the left of the glossy-black-finished gauge pod hood with stitched upholstery.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD’s cabin layout is generally similar to that of the 2022 Silverado 1500, meaning that an electronically controlled gear selector will likely be placed on the console.

If everything is almost clear with the exterior and interior, there is no certainty regarding the powertrains so far. Several upgrades are possible including a power boost.

The current engine lineup consists of 8-cylinder options: gasoline 6.6-liter L8T and 6.2-liter L86, as well as a 6.6-liter L5P Duramax diesel – mated either to a 6-speed or a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission.
