For the 2021 model year, the Porsche 718 family comes with the brand’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and a host of new features.
The 718s, namely Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0 models, plus Spyder and Cayman GT4 variants, with a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine are available now with the PDK. There are no interruptions in acceleration during gear changes.
What the PDK Brings
Compared with the manual gearbox used by these cars, the automatic transmission enables half a second faster acceleration: 3.9 seconds for a 0-62 mph sprint of the GT4 models, and 4.0 seconds the GTS 4.0s take.
The 309-kW (414 hp) 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 achieve 200 km/h in 13.4 seconds, the 294-kW (394 hp) 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 – in 13.7 seconds. This is 0.4 seconds faster than with the stick shift.
In the 718 GTS 4.0 cars, the standard Sport Chrono package adapts gear shifts of the PDK according to four different driving modes: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus (comes with integrated Launch Control) and Individual.
The Sport Response button in the center of the mode switch allows the driver to activate maximum engine and transmission performance for 20 seconds, irrespective of the current driving mode. This function helps with spontaneous overtaking manoeuvers.
In the flagship 718 GT4 models, a driving mode can be programed for top performance using the PDK Sport button. An automatic selector lever underlines the GT experience.
The PDK’s 7th gear has a shorter ratio in all 718 four-liter naturally aspirated engine derivatives.
To better traction, longitudinal and lateral dynamics, and to add driving pleasure, Porsche enhances mechanical locking rear differential in the PDK versions of the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4.
In traction and overrun modes, this achieves locking values of 30 and 37 percent vs 22 and 27 percent with the manual transmission.
The Porsche 718 family got new features for 2021. They include High-quality Race-Tex material with a highly breathable structure. It replaces the Alcantara fabric. The Python Green finish is added to color range of the 718 GT models.
The 718 Spyder will be available with 20-inch wheels in Aurum, available only for the 718 Cayman GT4 before. Conventional summer tires of similar size are optional. They come instead of the standard ultra-high-performance ones.
