Plug-in Hybrid Kia Sorento Arrives in the USA

The fourth-generation Kia Sorento adds a plug-in hybrid version for the U.S. market. Kia says it will reach showrooms in the third quarter of 2021.

The 2022 Kia Sorento Turbo PHEV is coming to join gasoline and hybrid models. The carmaker will offer the SUV in two grades: SX and SX-P, and produce it at its Hwasung facility in South Korea.

In addition to obvious benefits, such as the third row of seats, standard all-wheel-drive, and the most passenger room and second-row legroom of any hybrid crossover, the Sorento Turbo Plug-in Hybrid boasts a decent driving range of 460 miles and fuel economy of 79 MPGe combined (projected figures).  The pure electric driving range achieves 32 miles.

All this is attainable through a powertrain that comprises a 1.6L turbo-four and a 66.9-kW electric motor delivering 262 horsepower in total. For comparison: already present on the American market, the Sorento Hybrid has a power system with a total output of 227 hp.

The 2022 Kia Sorento Turbo PHEV offers 13 standard advanced driver assistance systems. The vehicle is eligible for a Federal Tax Credit and state incentives. Its pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

The regular gasoline Kia Sorento starts at $29,390, the Kia Sorento Hybrid costs $33,590 for an entry-level SUV. It is not known yet how much the Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid will cost, but we assume its price tag will start at 38-40K US dollars.

The Sorento is one of the most popular mid-size crossovers in the United States. Since the beginning of 2021, its sales have amounted to 54,000 units. But we must admit that its stablemate Hyundai Santa Fe sold 76,000 vehicles during the same period.
