Nissan’s VC-Turbo Engine: Why It Is One of the Best

Nissan has done it again: its VC-Turbo engine found itself on the list of “Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems 2022”.

Nissan’s VC-Turbo engine is the world’s first production variable compression ratio engine whose uniqueness lies in the fact that both surprising fuel efficiency and overwhelming high power are achieved.

High power and high fuel efficiency are two performance characteristics that ordinarily oppose each other, but here they are a tandem.

The VC-Turbo engine uses a multi-link system in place of a traditional connecting rod. That system allows free control of the compression ratio critical factor of power and efficiency on demand.

You can meet the mentioned capable engine under the hood of the brand’s bestseller – the Nissan Rogue/X-Trail, as well as on the Nissan Altima or Infiniti models.

All 2023 Rogue vehicles, for example, are powered by a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder VC-Turbo that delivers 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque in pair with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and standard front-wheel drive or optional AWD.

The advantages of Nissan’s VC-Turbo engine include high power for a low-displacement 3-cylinder unit, very good fuel economy, increased torque, smoothness and quietness at idle, and its ability to work well both in city traffic and on the highway.
