The new-generation Nissan Frontier will appear in public in three concept versions at the 2022 Chicago Auto Show that runs on February 12 – 21 at McCormick Place.
The automaker’s California design studio, Nissan Design America, has developed a trio of 2022 Nissan Frontier-based concept trucks – Project 72X, Project Hardbody, and Project Adventure – and sends them to the upcoming motor show in Chicago.
All three are based on the Crew Cab platform and S, SV, or PRO-4X trim levels; they target three different audiences, lifestyles; the concepts combine readily available and aftermarket parts/accessories with custom-designed pieces and graphics.
Project 72X Frontier
This variant is based on the Crew Cab S 4×4 configuration. This is a modern take on the once very popular Datsun 720 truck made in 1955-1997 and then replaced by the Nissan Navara/Frontier.
The Project 72X Frontier has gray exterior tones and graphics, white-painted steel wheels (actually the 2022 Frontier’s spare wheels) with PRO-4X tires; a 2.5-inch lift kit with adjustable front upper suspension arms, and a sports bar behind the cab.
Project Hardbody
This version based on the Crew Cab SV 4×4 grade pays homage to the iconic Nissan D21 “Hardbody” – a champion in on- and off-road competitions.
The vehicle offers a 3-inch lift kit with adjustable upper control arms, overfenders taken from the current PRO-4X model, and classic Hardbody block-style wheels with 33-inch tires. Also, the Project Hardbody features door graphics with ’80s-style shadow outlining, blacked-out front end, a sports bar with 10-inch rectangular LED lights, and a bed-mounted spare tire carrier.
Project Adventure
This concept is designed for overland adventurers and is based on the Crew Cab PRO-4X variant of the 2022 Nissan Frontier.
A distinction of the Project Adventure is the custom body wrap that depicts an atlas of the USA. Besides, the pickup features a 5-inch lift kit, 34-inch mud-terrain tires, a special carbon fiber snorkel, a bed rack system and LoadWarrior roof basket from Yakima, a sky tent, and Kicker’s Bluetooth bed audio system.
The new 2022 Nissan Frontier started well on the American market. It has been on sale since September 2021. In the fourth quarter of last year, the carmaker sold 22,634 vehicles (USA) and 1,253 units (Canada). The competitor of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline costs from USD 28,140 MSRP, and goes up to USD 37,370 fully loaded; starts at CAD 39,998 MSRP and costs about CAD 47,498 fully loaded.
