The next, third-generation Toyota Sequoia is based on the brand’s new architecture and powered by a new engine. Expect its market launch by the end of 2022.
America is in anticipation of the debut of the all-new Toyota Tundra pickup truck this year. As the Sequoia three-row SUV is the Tundra’s close relative, they will share underpinnings, powertrains, and, with a few differences, the exterior and interior design. The SUV should land after the truck – sometime next year.
The manufacturer has piqued interest in the Tundra by revealing some details. Let’s recall what we already know: all that is informed about the pickup can be applied to the upcoming Toyota Sequoia, we believe.
A new TNGA-F body-on-frame platform will underpin the vehicles. A twin-turbo 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine will power both. This engine delivers 409 hp and 479 lb-ft in the latest Land Cruiser. Thus, Sequoia’s current 381-hp V8 engine will most likely leave.
One of Toyota’s teaser photos reveals a new iForce MAX powertrain with blue lettering hinting at its hybrid nature. Expect a 10-speed automatic transmission, rear- or four-wheel-drive choices, independent rear suspension setup on the Sequoia.
As for changes in the cabin, they should be significant, as the current interior is outdated. A more up-to-date, large, center-mounted touchscreen display of the infotainment system will replace the existing 7.0-inch one. Wireless charging will be available as well.
Toyota debuted the Sequoia in 2000 as a 2001 model. This sports utility vehicle for up to 8 occupants sat between the mid-size 4Runner and the full-size Land Cruiser. The latter won’t reach North American shores in its latest 300-series, but the new Toyota Sequoia, when it arrives, will be a replacement to the Land Cruiser at the big end of the company’s SUV lineup on the continent.
The current Sequoia starts at $51,995 in the USA including a delivery fee. Expect the new-generation model to be more expensive. By comparison, the rivals’ prices start at $50,295 (Chevrolet Tahoe), $50,720 (Ford Expedition).
The Toyota Sequoia is coming as a 2023 model and will be assembled at the factory in San Antonio, Texas, along with the Tundra.
