The Ford Fiesta ST’s and Volkswagen Polo GTI’s rival from Hyundai is coming.
An N-badged i20 hatchback is being tested in northern Sweden on a frozen lake in Arjeplog with Thierry Neuville (Hyundai Motorsport’s WRC driver) behind the wheel.
A prototype is being featured in a teaser video. Previously the Hyundai i20 N test cars became preys of car paparazzi several times, including at the Nürburgring and on public roads.
Larger wheels with beefier brakes, dual exhaust pipes, a lowered suspension are this hot car distinctions.
Under the hood expect a mill making around 200 hp. It may be a gasoline 1.6-liter engine of the Kia Ceed GT or a variant of Hyundai i30 N’s unit, paired either with a manual gearbox or a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
It seems the company is going to flood the market with sports vehicles. Besides the warm N-Line and the hot N models, like the i30 N, Veloster N and the upcoming Kona N (should arrive this year), i20 N and the next-generation Tucson N, Hyundai also plans to unveil a mid-engine sports car in the next years. The carmaker previewed it by a RM19 prototype.
The new Hyundai i20 N should debut in the coming months and go on sale in late 2020 or early 2021.
We’ll meet it in the European market, but hardly in North America, where subcompact cars are not as popular as in Europe with its space shortage.
