Volkswagen works on the next-generation Amarok midsize pickup truck to launch in 2022 in Europe.
Volkswagen built the Amarok in Argentina. This is a traditional body-on-frame truck with double-wishbone suspension at the front and leaf springs at the rear. In 2020, Volkswagen discontinued the model in Europe but also announced a new version in 2022 based on the Ford Ranger.
Recent talks say the next-generation Amarok will be part of the Volkswagen-Ford partnership, which apart from the Ranger-based Amarok includes a VW Caddy based on the Ford City van, and another commercial vehicle.
The Volkswagen Amarok has its success story in Europe and Latin America, where it is popular. It has been never designed for the North American market, as that continent has its own pickup favorites. Some rumors have been circulating, saying that the Amarok will possibly land in the USA.
What should we expect from the next-gen VW Amarok made in collaboration with Ford?
It will be likely available only in a dual-cab configuration and with several powertrain options on offer, including a 2.3-liter turbo-four, a 2.7-liter turbo-six, and maybe 4- and 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines (outside the USA).
Some insiders suggest that Volkswagen will use an updated variant of the 3.0-liter V6 TDI which powered the previous Amarok. As for its styling and equipment, Volkswagen says they will differ from those of the Ford Ranger.
