Mercedes-Benz works on a redesigned GLS model, namely it luxury Maybach variant able to compete with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga, Lagonda cars. The first test vehicles became the objects of attention of carparazzi.
The prototypes have been spotted in the brand’s main test center in Germany. The Maybach GLS body and optics are the same as the regular GLS’s, but its radiator grille differs.
The Mercedes’s elongated MHA platform (close relative of MRA familiar on the GLC) has become a basis for the new Maybach, which, in addition, took much of its design from the Mercedes-Benz Vision Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept (pictured above). The latter debuted at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show.
Externally we may expect a choice of two-tone color scheme like on the Maybach S-Class, as well an extra-spacious four-seat interior. As for the technical part, a powerful 4.0-liter eight-cylinder twin-turbo motor will be the core for the model’s powertrain. A PHEV variant is possible.
The refreshed Mercedes GLS will premiere soon in Los Angeles as a 2020 model. The Maybach GLS will be likely unveiled in 2019 as a 2021 model.
The carmaker will put it into production at the factory in the USA (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), where they built the current GLS.
The GLS is not the first Maybach-branded SUV of Mercedes. The carmaker also launched the Maybach G650 Landaulet in 2017 in limited edition.
Generally speaking, Maybach proved to be successful. Every tenth S-Class sold last year was a Maybach vehicle. This sub-brand is especially popular in large markets of USA, China and Russia.
