Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Got Comprehensive Technology Update

The manufacturer has updated the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for the next model year. The van acquires a new engine, a new transmission, and a new all-wheel-drive system.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is powered by the efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine. It is now available for all versions in up to four output categories: 84 kW/114 hp, 110 kW/150 hp, 125 kW/170 hp, 140 kW/190 hp.

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission replaces the previous 7G-TRONIC PLUS. It is adopted by all Sprinter variants. The new transmission requires as little installation space as its predecessor, but it is more comfortable and state-of-the-art.

Finally, the new all-wheel drive with a Torque-on-demand system is a replacement for the current drive system. These technical advancements add driving comfort on almost any terrain.

In addition, the new Sprinter receives a ‘goodie’ – Speed Delivery Door available ex-factory. This is an automatic, swiveling door on the co-driver’s side, controlled by sensors, and transparent from the interior. On request, it replaces the side sliding door to the load compartment. The Speed Delivery Door automatically unlocks and opens after a light barrier detects the driver entering the load compartment from the driver’s seat.

The German automaker sold 16,986 Sprinter vans in the USA in the first half of 2021. For comparison: 51,713 Ford Transit vehicles and 16,940 units of the Ford Transit Connect were sold in the same period.

Mercedes will announce U.S.-specific variants of the Sprinter closer to its launch which will take place this year or in early 2022. The company has not unveiled details yet.
