Mercedes will introduce an a high-performance AMG version of the all-new Mercedes CLA coupe sedan very soon. The upcoming model is the second one with slightly reduced power and dynamics.
The intention of the German manufacturer to introduce a lightweight variant of its most compact and powerful AMG A35 hatchback was known a few months before the debut of the base car’s new fourth generation.
Then paparazzi’s cameras repeatedly caught the prototypes. It was not a range-topping 400-hp A45 hatch, but its less potent A35 modification developed by Mercedes-AMG.
Later the premiere of the new-generation standard A-Class took place, followed by debuts of all its adjacent models, including a fully new sedan. The 2020 CLA premiered too, as well as ‘weaker’ AMG versions.
Last year the automaker introduced the A35 AMG. Recently the A35 AMG Sedan has been unveiled. The both got a 2.0-liter twin-turbo 4 with 306hp of output.
Now there is a teaser of the CLA35 AMG, which does not differ much from the hatchback and sedan by its technical ‘stuff’. The key difference is a stylish body often called the four-door coupe. The model itself debuts this month.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA35 AMG got the same bi-turbo four-cylinder engine. Its 0-62 mph acceleration will take about 4.7 seconds. For comparison: the modern CLA45 AMG with a 380-hp motor speeds up within 4.2 sec.
Why do lightweight AMG models are attractive for customers?
In fact, they are full-fledged performance versions designed exactly by Mercedes-AMG and with original AMG suspension, gearbox, engine, external sports elements. However, these cars have less power and torque, need more time for acceleration.
Another thing is the price. For example, the high-end Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG coupe sedan, which is sold today, costs significantly more than $50,000. The less powerful Mercedes-Benz CLA35 AMG will be cheaper by $10,000. That is the main stimulus for buyers.
