Mazda 3 May Receive a Two-Door Coupe Version

Mazda filed certain patent documents with the U.S. and European patent offices which indirectly confirm the development of a Mazda 3 Coupe.

Lately, the news about a possible launch of the Mazda 3 Coupe has been circulating on the automotive media. Journalists have uncovered a pair of patent documents filed with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and the European Patent Office.

Those documents allow thinking about a two-door coupe version of the Mazda 3 that currently comes only in hatchback and sedan body styles.

Indeed, the sports two-door coupe is what the Mazda lineup misses. A sporty body style for the Mazda 3 could be an interesting solution, especially since the company has never sold the model in the coupe form before, unlike some rivals.

According to CarBuzz, the first patent document (a drawing) shows a silhouette of a Mazda 3 Hatchback, but the related text describes a 2-door body shell, precisely “a pair of doors attached to both sides of the vehicle body…”.

The second patent shows a frameless door design, while the text describes the doors as ‘sashless’ (this term refers to frameless doors and windows). The document also explains that the door window might be “not only glass-made but reinforced plastic-made.”

A plastic window helps reduce weight and is more suitable for sports cars. Thus, we can assume that the new structure itself could be applied to a coupe sports car with a lightweight plastic-made window.

There could be a long way from the patent to the actual production… But the potential of creating a new coupe exists.
