Maybach Joins the SUV Club with a New GLS

Mercedes reveals the Maybach GLS 600 4Matic at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show.

In parallel it makes its world debut at Auto Guangzhou in China. With this model, Mercedes-Maybach joins the ultra-luxury SUV segment in which other high-end brands, like Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, have already had their representatives.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic combines the GLS’s body design and tech with the luxury of a top-class sedan. Pricing will be announced later. The SUV will go on sale in the second half of next year.

What makes the vehicle exclusive?

The model is available as a 5-seater or a 4-seater with individual executive rear seats. The highest-grade materials including Maybach-exclusive leather are used inside.

Ambient lighting is mounted in the roof. There is a wooden parcel shelf inside, that separates the passenger space from the cargo space.

The seats with elevated seating position have adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions. Thanks to electronically operated roller sun blinds on rear windows, occupants can choose which part of surroundings they want to see.

The AirMatic suspension helps cope with the road bumps. There is a first-ever dedicated Maybach drive program to ensure exclusive comfort.

All in the model is made for convenience. Passengers, for example, can easy access and egress: when the doors open, the vehicle lowers slightly, and an illuminated running aluminum board emerges instantly and quietly on the respective side of the car.

Other Maybach-exclusive features include a grille with vertical louvres, a standing Mercedes-Benz star on the hood, projected logos; chrome trim elements, emblems, lettering; 22-inch or 23-inch multi-spoke light alloy wheels, 8 available two-tone color choices.

The Maybach-exclusive 4.0-liter 8-cylinder twin-turbo engine develops 550 hp and 538 lb-ft (729 Nm) of torque. It is matched with the 48-volt EQ Boost system adding 21 hp more.

0-60 mph (97 km) acceleration takes 4.8 seconds. The SUV achieves a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h). It is good for such a big and heavy vehicle.

What else?

The Maybach GLS 600 comes with the brand’s famous MBUX infotainment system, as well as the Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system.

Rear passengers can enjoy the Executive Climate System and Rear Seat Entertainment with a pair of 11.6-inch touchscreens, along with a 7-inch MBUX tablet and wireless headphones.
