The legendary sports car for drag racing – Chevrolet COPO Camaro – became all-electric and got 700-hp performance.
The COPO Camaro sports coupe is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The model received a gift from Chevrolet – a concept car with all-electric drive called eCOPO Camaro. It is first shown at the SEMA show.
The upgraded racing coupe got a pair of BorgWarner HVH 250-150 electric motors with a total output of 700 hp (522 kW) and 814 Nm of torque. They replaced the petrol eight-cylinder engine. The Turbo 40 automatic gearbox remained the same, as well as the cardan transmission and rear differential in the crankcase of a continuous axle.
There are four battery packs in the eCOPO Camaro. Two are mounted instead of the rear seat, two more are in the trunk. Their capacity is unknown. As a result of this placement the racing electric car has an almost ideal weight distribution along the axes. The traction battery works under 800 volts!
While development and testing of the electric car is still ongoing, Chevrolet expects its new offspring to be able to run 402 m (quarter mile) in just 9 seconds. For comparison: the similar ability of the Tesla Model S P100D is few seconds less.
However, the eCOPO Camaro is still a concept. According to General Motors speakers, all successful features of this electric car will be used in regular versions in the future.
