Ford has filed a patent for a range-extender that can be mounted in electric pickups or even non-pickups.
This interesting unit is fitted in the pickup’s cargo bed. It provides additional driving range per charge, works as a conventional generator, similar to the one people use at home when electricity goes out.
The unit can recharge batteries of electric cars. Besides, it can directly supply electricity to power the vehicle for a time necessary to reach a charging cord.
The range-extender patented by Ford works exactly the same way, but with a twist: all related components are located in a removable in-bed toolbox.
The modular design will let transfer the power unit between electric Ford pickups. This gives benefit to a commercial fleet owner whose F-150 EVs might need extra range for specific tasks.
