The new product rides on the Ford C2 platform shared with the Ford Escape. The new pickup is smaller than the Ford Ranger, and considerably cheaper, as Blue Oval promises. It is about the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of below $20,000: $4,000 less than the entry-level 2021 Ranger.
If the Maverick really costs less than 20k USD, it will be the most affordable offering in Ford’s lineup. For this money, customers will receive a SuperCrew cab configuration, a 1.5-liter 181-hp EcoBoost I-3 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, incandescent exterior lighting, steelie-style wheels, a twist-beam rear suspension, and front-wheel-drive.
An all-wheel-drive version with an independent rear suspension will also be on offer, as well as an off-road-oriented variant, and a hybrid one. A 2.0L 237-hp EcoBoost I-4 will be optional. A naturally aspirated 4-cylinder could remain for a base model.
Ford will produce the Maverick at its assembly plant in Hermosillo. This is the same site where the Ford Bronco Sport is built. Production of the Ford Maverick should start in July 2021.
