Ford Explorer Will Be Available in All-Electric Guise…Soon

Ford has announced a pure electric Explorer: not clear, when exactly, but promised soon, as part of the plan to have 40% of the brand’s range fully electric by 2030.

An all-new, flexible, all- and rear-wheel drive electric platform is on the way, according to yesterday’s financial presentation. Blue Oval designs the architecture «for cargo vehicles, pickups and rugged SUVs» (Mike Levine, Ford North America Product Communications Manager).

Really, Ford already has such EVs as the E-Transit electric van, the F-150 Lightning pickup, the Mustang Mach-E crossover. The Bronco will be probably a rugged SUV in Ford’s electric lineup.

The three-row Explorer with the electric powertrain is also in the pipeline. Expect it’ll look similar to the gas-powered Explorer, and receive the same hi-tech features – a Sync 4A infotainment system, for example, as Ford’s latest EVs – the Mach-e or the F-150 Lightning.

The current 2021 Ford Explorer comes with a 2.3L 300-hp turbo-four, a 3.0-liter 365-hp twin-turbo engine, and a hybrid powertrain that comprises a 3.3-liter 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor, with the total output of 318 hp and 322 pound-feet. The base price of the model is $32,675 before fees, taxes, charges.
