New, near-official images show the upcoming BMW i7 ahead of the next BMW 7 Series debut in 2022.
BMW has released images of the new pure electric BMW i7. Its development nears completion, and the model is being tested now. We expect the carmaker to unveil the vehicle next year alongside the new 7 Series sedan, with sales to start towards the end of 2022.
The I7 is actually an electric version of the 7 Series, as both use the same BMW CLAR platform. The introduction of the electric version of BMW’s flagship sedan means the brand will have a direct competitor for the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S.

As flagships, the upcoming 7 Series and i7 will get BMW’s latest technologies including self-driving as one of the main features.
The i7 will use the fifth-generation BMW eDrive tech that integrates an electric motor, electronics, and transmission into a single unit reducing overall weight and size.
Full performance details will be released later. The BMW i7 will have to offer at least 400 miles of range to be competitive. The Tesla Model S currently offers up to 390 miles, the Mercedes EQS – nearly 500 miles.
