Road test of the updated 2020 BMW 5 Series are underway. A test mule of the model’s hybrid version has been caught car paparazzi’s eye.
Expect its official debut in the first half of next year and market launch till the end of 2020.
The 2020 BMW 5 Series will have a modernized look and several upgrades under the skin.
Apart from the BMW 530e Performance plug-in hybrid variant, one more plug-in hybrid modification – the 545e – may join the range according to rumors, with a 394-hp powertrain inherited from the larger 7 Series.
The current 530e’s electric-only driving range is 32 miles (52 km). The next 2020 model will likely be able to cover a longer distance. In the spy photos, by the way, we can see a hybrid test vehicle.
The 2020 BMW 5 Series Touring PHEV is possibly in the pipeline. It is also known BMW has been developing a new all-electric 5-Series-based model with three electric motors delivering together 720 hp.
The vehicle will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 3 seconds. One of these motors can be found in the next BMW iX3.
The current 5 Series is the seven-generation car. It is priced from €49,100 in Germany, $53,400 in the the USA, £41,710 in the UK, depending of trim levels available, which are not the same in different markets. We do not expect significant charges in pricing for the facelift 5 Series.
In the segment of luxury sedans, where the BMW 5 Series is a star, it competes with such strong rivals as the Audi A6, Genesis G80, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti Q70, Jaguar XF, Lexus GS, Mercedes E-Class and the Volvo S90.
