Apple introduces a digital key to open and start cars using iPhone.
iPhone’s Apple Wallet hosts the BMW Digital Key.
The key will enable customers to tap to unlock, then to place the iPhone in the smartphone tray and push the start button. The digital key is set up through the BMW Smartphone App. Access is possible from inside the vehicle and through Apple Wallet.
The new digital key also offers Apple Watch compatibility, ability to share access with up to 5 friends via iMessage, and storage in the iPhone’s Secure Element. The feature can function for up to 5 hours thanks to power reserve, in case the phone is off due to a low charge of the battery.
The Digital Key specification 2.0 for NFC has been released in May 2020, while the next generation is already well underway.
The BMW Digital Key for iPhone will be available in 45 countries for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Series, 8 Series, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4, if built after July 1, 2020. Compatible iPhone models will be iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer, and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer.
Yesterday at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, BMW and Apple also announced a new feature for CarPlay users. It helps take BMW electric vehicles on a longer trip by planning it in advance on iPhone or by entering the destination through Apple CarPlay.
Apple Maps select the optimal route based on electric range and locations of charging stations along the way. This feature will first be available in the BMW i4 next year.
