Coil Spring Rear Suspension vs Leaf Spring Setup in Ford F-150

One of the highlights of the third-generation Ford F-150 Raptor, just unveiled, is its brand new coil-spring rear suspension that brings certain benefits.

The off-road Ford F-150 Raptor is all about the suspension.

The rivaling Ram 1500 TRX has a coil spring suspension setup too, while the Raptor’s ‘little brother’ – the 2021 Ford F-150 Tremor – will be coming with leaf springs.

What is remarkable about Ford’s coil-spring rear suspension?

The third-generation Raptor’s coil-spring rear suspension consists of a five-link setup with extra-long trailing arms, a Panhard rod, and the longest-in-the-class 24-inch coil springs.

Compared to the leaf-spring rear suspension of the first- and second-generation Raptors, the new coil-spring setup offers obvious improvements, and will apparently make its way into future Ford F-150 variants.

It is substantially lighter than a comparable leaf spring system, better articulates over obstacles, and decreases friction in the spring system.

Moreover, coil springs provide better ride quality and handling prowess than leaf spring setups.

With each generation of the Raptor, Ford generally increased the suspension travel, the capability of shock absorbers, and the performance of tires.

The new Ford F-150 Raptor, when it runs on 35-inch tires, achieves a quarter more rear suspension travel (15 in) than the predecessor, and 2 inches more than the Ram 1500 TRX.
