The new-generation BMW 5 debuts on May 24, 2023, along with the BMW i5.
The BMW 5 Series is a middle child in the family of BMW sedans: it is a choice for buyers who consider the 3 Series too cramped and the 7 Series too cumbersome. The 5 Series is not as popular as the 3 Series which is the world’s best-selling BMW car, but still is a strong seller in its segment.
Production, Sales
The Bavarian automaker has produced the 5 Series since 1972, and this year the model is entering already its eighth generation.
The official premiere of the 2024 BMW 5 Series and its first-ever pure electric variant – the BMW i5 – will take place next month, on May 24. After that, the new model will be put into production in the summer of 2023 at BMW’s Plant Dingolfing. The market launch will commence in October 2023.
A new iteration of the performance BMW M5 is also in the cards, as well as the Touring wagon versions whose debut is set for spring 2024.

Like other products of BMW, this car will apply the brand’s newest technological and mechanical solutions.
Innovations
Two specifications are mentioned so far: the range-topping BMW i5 M60 xDrive and BMW i5 eDrive40. Both are fitted with Adaptive Suspension Professional with an electronically controlled damper. The suspension is standard for the i5 M60 xDrive and optional for the i5 eDrive40,
Other innovations for the model include Highway Assistant and Active Lane Change with eye activation. The Highway Assistant tech allows attentive, hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph when traffic conditions and speed limits allow. The Active Lane Change system monitors the driver’s level of alertness by means of an interior camera and offers a lane change.
The latest, 9th generation of BMW’s Vertical Dynamics Management debuts in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This technology is based on a newly developed control logic and factors in all available input variables. It favors the physical calculation of data given the current driving situation.
Range
We expect that both i5 versions will be able to travel 295 miles on a single charge according to the EPA cycle.
Competition
The closest rival to the 2024 BMW i5 is the Tesla Model 3. Other competitors are the Mercedes-Benz EQE-Class, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Audi E-Tron GT.
Price
The estimated price is between $70,000 and $75,000.
