Automaker Explains Why GMC Hummer EV SUV Is Less Powerful Than Its Pickup Sibling

During an online briefing for selected media, the manufacturer explained why the power disparity between a SUV version and a pickup truck version of the GMC Hummer EV happened.

Compared to the pickup, the SUV is 20 inches shorter overall, and it has a 9-inch shorter wheelbase. What does it mean?  – It means there is less room for battery modules in the SUV resulting in 830 hp of power it offers versus the truck’s 1000 hp.

The company didn’t want to compromise a cargo space and a flat load floor, so decided to sacrifice the space for the battery pack. Instead, the GMC Hummer EV SUV can boast improved maneuverability.

We suppose the potency of 830 hp is still great, even if it underperforms the 1000-hp pickup truck. Nevertheless, GM says they will increase the SUV’s horsepower in the future, as soon as their batteries become smaller and more efficient.

Besides, the Hummer EV family benefits from the flexible modularity of General Motors’ new Ultium battery platform. Such architecture is able to accommodate various body styles, lengths, widths, ride heights. The continuous structural elements enable such unique features as removable sky panels.

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will start at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in early 2023.
