Launch

The Stelvio was revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. The automaker unveiled the refreshed 2023 model in October 2022, and its sales begin in early 2023.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has a high-performance Quadrifoglio version.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a new development. One of its variants is an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid that is the brand’s first electrified vehicle.

The production model made its global debut on February 8, 2022. The Tonale should go into series production this spring (March), with the sales to start shortly after.

Engines

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes with a 2.2-liter 210-hp diesel engine or a turbocharged 4-cylinder 2.0-liter 280-hp gasoline unit. Standard RWD or optional AWD is available. The hot Quadrifoglio is available with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 putting out 505 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque.

The US-spec 2023 Tonale offers all-wheel drive and one 272-hp (275 PS) plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder, a 90-kWh electric motor, and a 15.5-kWh battery.

European markets, in addition to the PHEV version, receive a 128 hp (130 PS) diesel option, or a 1.5-liter gasoline mild-hybrid front-wheel-drive variant with a total of 158 hp (160 PS).

Prices

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is larger and more expensive than the Tonale.

In the USA, the Stelvio’s base MSRP is $46,575. The range-topping Stelvio Quadrifoglio starts at $88,175. The Tonale’s estimated starting price is $38,000

The entry-level prices in the domestic (Italian) market are roughly 32,000 euros for the Stelvio and 25,000 euros for the Tonale.

Competition

The Stelvio competes with the Lexus RX, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Porsche Macan. In its turn, the Tonale will fight against such models as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, or the BMW X1.
