The Mercedes-Benz car, namely a 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe from 1955, has been auctioned for €135 million ($142 mln) to a private collector. So, it is now the most valuable vehicle in history, the German automaker reports.
The auction was held on May 5, 2022, for select customers at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in cooperation with RM Sotheby’s. The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe is one of two unique road-legal sports cars in the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection.
The second original remains in company ownership and will continue to be on display at the corporate museum in Bad CannStatt.
The rare front mid-engined 2-seater received the name in honor of Rudolf Uhlenhaut, its creator and Daimler-Benz motorsport chief. The 300 SLR once served as his personal car.
Experts and enthusiasts consider the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe to be one of the finest examples of automotive design and engineering.
This is a significant automotive icon. Its main distinguisher is “gullwing” doors. The car also features an outstanding performance delivered by racing technology.
Proceeds from the auction will be used to establish a “Mercedes-Benz Fund” supporting a global scholarship program.
So, Mercedes-Benz Group AG wants to help young innovators and developers who work on projects for a sustainable future, especially decarbonization and resource preservation.
