The End of the Classic Volvo Era?

Volvo’s European lineup has effectively been reduced to a single estate car: the Volvo V60. It is available as a Plug-in Hybrid and a Mild Hybrid. Everything else is either an SUV or a crossover. There is also the all-electric Volvo ES90 sedan, but that’s a completely different segment.

In other words, you can no longer walk into a Volvo dealership and buy a conventional petrol or diesel sedan or estate. As we can see, internal combustion engines haven’t disappeared completely—petrol ones are still around. Their role has simply changed: they are now available only as part of hybrid powertrains. Diesel-powered Volvo passenger cars are now history.

Can we say that the era of classic Volvos is coming to an end? Yes, we probably can. But here’s the real question: should we see a brand changing its identity as something dramatic? For decades, Volvo was synonymous with sedans and estates. Today, it is primarily about SUVs and crossovers.

The answer is actually quite simple: the market. Fans of traditional body styles haven’t gone anywhere, but the majority of buyers now prefer crossovers. Nobody is forcing them to make that choice, and nobody has to convince them. They simply like SUVs. They find them more comfortable. There’s no drama or tragedy here. It’s just the natural evolution of consumer demand.
