9 Ways to Combat Humidity In the Car Cabin

The high humidity of vehicles’ interiors causes foggy windows, reduced visibility, and increased risk of accidents. We propose 9 ways to combat humidity inside your car.

Cars need special care in the cold rainy season. There may be a problem with humidity in the cabin. However, with the right approach, the problem can be quickly eliminated, but first, you need to understand the causes. Our tips are not a panacea, but they won’t be superfluous.

1. Replacing the Cabin Filter

This is one of the weak points of the ventilation system. If the cabin filter is clogged, ventilation won’t provide the proper level of blowing in the cabin.

Also, a clogged filter can be a moisture concentrator, which can lead to bacteria growth in it. This filter should be replaced before the cold. In general, you should change it every 15,000 km.

2. Forced Ventilation

Any vehicle has technological holes for ventilation, usually in the trunk or the floor. As a rule, the holes are quite small, so they are often blocked or covered.  Regularly check the forced ventilation system. Otherwise, moisture will not be able to escape from the interior and will condense on the glasses.

3. Dryer

Modern, moisture-absorbing, reusable car dehumidifiers help keep your car interior dry.  There is a wide range of such products on the market for every design and taste.

4. Cleaning the Engine Compartment

Falling leaves and other objects under the hood in the area in front of the windshield can clog the ventilation system and make it difficult for the interior to blow normally.

Also, such an obstacle can collect moisture and be a direct source of an unpleasant smell in the cabin. To prevent moisture from getting inside, you should remove all foreign objects from under the hood.

5. Care of Seals

Over time, all rubber products dry out and lose their properties. Sears is no exception. Lubricate all seals on doors, windows, and hatches regularly. If they are porous, torn, and do not fit tightly, then water can easily enter inside.

Treat them with silicone grease: it is not expensive but enough for a long time, and the seals will be “like new”.

6. Cleaning of Drains

Clogged door drains are the main cause of moisture in the vehicle’s cabin. As a rule, they are clean during the first two years after the car leaves the assembly line. Then they need cleanup.

Take a piece of steel wire of appropriate diameter and simply clean the drains. Usually, the drainage hole is located in the lower part of the door under the seal.

7. Use of Rubber Mats

In winter, you should use shuttle car mats made of rubber: they are easy to shake and easily hold snow or ice. You can put paper under the mats. Paper is hygroscopic and effectively helps in drying, though you’ll have to frequently replace it.

8. Windshield Ventilation

The most effective means of combating glass fogging is the blowing of the windshield. However, it should not be used in severe frost – the glass may crack due to a large temperature difference.

Accordingly, the interior temperature should be raised gradually. If you close all the deflectors, the airflow blowing the glass will be stronger.

9. Use of Chemicals

Drivers have been using anti-fog products for a long time. Basically, they contain alcohol and reagents that prevent moisture from settling evenly on the glass.

In general, this method is quite effective, but a good long-lasting means can be quite expensive. Therefore, some drivers neglect it.
