2024 GMC Sierra HD: What’s New, How Challenges to Rivals

A refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD has been recently unveiled. Sales begin in the first quarter of next year.

Following the more popular GMC Sierra 1500, General Motors has introduced the larger 2024 GMC Sierra HD.

When to Expect

The new truck will be arriving at dealer showrooms in Q1 2023. Official pricing will be announced closer to the beginning of mass production. The GMC Sierra HD AT4X off-roader comes in 2024.

Competition

The Chevrolet Silverado HD is cheaper but similarly capable as the GMC Sierra HD. However, the Chevy truck has no variant to match the Denali trim.

The Ford Super Duty is well-packed with trailering features making it a strong rival to the Sierra HD.

The Ram 2500 has a better ride thanks to the coil springs it is equipped with.

If you do not get hung up on carrying capacity, the GMC Sierra 1500 can be a nice alternative to the Sierra HD: it is quite capable on its own, less expensive, easier to drive, and consumes less fuel.

New GMC Sierra HD

The carmaker made a revision of trim levels and added new premium Denali Ultimate and off-road AT4X versions. Exterior changes include the revamped frond end and new colors.

Inside, there are new treatments/designs for certain trims, and high-tech digital displays – a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

Towing ability is important for a full-size pickup, so, the company has worked in this direction offering a wide list of trailering assistance technologies via a ProGrade trailering system for the new GMC Sierra HD.

The towing figures are up to 22,500 pounds for the Sierra HD 2500 models, and 36,000 pounds for the Sierra HD 3500.

In addition, the vehicle offers such ‘goodies’ as up to 14 available camera views and a Pro Safety Plus Package that includes premium features like Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Braking.

Engines

The engine lineup includes the base gasoline naturally aspirated 6.6-liter V8 L8T engine that makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft, and the optional Duramax turbodiesel (6.6L V8 L5P).

The latter is more powerful and refined now: 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque vs the previous 445 hp and 910 lb-ft.  A new 10-speed Allision transmission replaces the previous 6-speed one.
