2022 Toyota GR 86 Debuts: Marks Revival of Brand’s Sportscar Lineage

Toyota introduces a new iteration of the 86 sports car. The lightweight 2+2 rear-wheel-drive coupe is developed by the Toyota Gazoo Racing team.

Toyota enhanced handling and exterior aerodynamics, increased rigidity, power, torque, and upgraded interior.

Nimble curb weight is just over 2,800 lbs now. A 2.4-liter naturally aspirated, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder boxer engine powers the car. On a manual version, it delivers 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. vs previous 205 hp 156 lb.-ft.

Transmission choices are a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. 0-60 mph acceleration time drops from 7 to 6.1 seconds for the MT, and from 8 to 6.6 seconds for the AT.

Two trim levels – GR 86 and GR 86 Premium are available. The car offers 7 exterior colors including Track bRED.

In the cabin, there are upgraded front seats with a deep bucket design, leather-trimmed driver touchpoints, and silver-colored accents. The Premium trim comes with a rear duckbill spoiler, Alcantara upholstery with leather accents.

A three-mode digital display offers different layouts for Normal, Sport, Track driving modes. An 8-inch Multimedia Touchscreen with 6 speakers comes as standard, while an 8-speaker system is on the Premium grade.

Connected Services, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility with NFC pairing, and a Sirius-XM three-Month All Access trial are available.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 comes with a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Sales start later this year. Toyota will announce pricing in the coming months.
