2022 Subaru WRX Debuts New Platform, Engine, Transmission

New-gen Subaru WRX Unveiled

The automaker has unveiled the fifth generation of the Subaru WRX on a new architecture, with a new engine and transmission. The model will be available at dealer showrooms early next year.

The brand’s rally icon rides on the Subaru Global Platform for the first time. It makes the car safer and more dynamic, less noisy, vibrant, and harsh. Under the hood of the newcomer, there is a 2.4-liter turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine that produces 271 horsepower.

The engine pairs with either a six-speed manual or an all-new automatic Subaru Performance Transmission. The latter incorporates adaptive shift control and offers up to 30% quicker upshifts (2nd to 3rd) and 50% quicker downshifts (3rd to 2nd).

Besides, a new range-topping grade joins for 2022 – GT. It adds unique exterior and interior accents, electronically controlled dampers, and drive mode select with up to 430 customization options.

Available technologies include a high-definition, tablet-style 11.6-inch Subaru Starlink multimedia display, the latest-generation EyeSight driver-assist system with new safety and convenience features.

The 2022 Subaru WRX also received dual-pinion electric power steering that provides a faster response and a better steering feel.

The company built the Subaru WRX (Subaru Impreza WRX before 2014) in sedan, wagon, and hatchback body styles at different times. The model has been on the market since 1992. The manufacturer first sold it in Japan, then the WRX entered other markets – Australia, North America, Europe.

The main features making this hot, all-wheel-drive version different from cheaper modifications include an air intake on the hood, a spoiler or wing on the trunk lid, a different radiator grille, reduced ground clearance, increased wheel diameter, and turbocharging for all variants.
