2020 Jeep Gladiator Is Brought to Europe: See It On Display At Camp Jeep

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator has reached Europe. These days it is on display at the Camp Jeep event in Italy. Sales start next year.

The Camp Jeep began on July 12, 2019 in San Martino di Castrozza, Italy. This is an annual event for Jeep owners and fans.

The all-new Jeep Gladiator is being showcased here. Its world premiere took place at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show (Nov 22 – Dec 1).

Jeep returns to the midsize pickup truck segment with this “most capable ever“ model and intends to beat rivals and take the lead.

The history of the model

The original Gladiator was made in 1962-1988. The new vehicle is the six-generation model and the first Jeep’s pickup since the Comanche was discontinued in 1992.

The history of Jeep’s pickup trucks dates back to 1947, when the Jeep Willys Overland arrived.

Then in 1956-1956 they produced the FC 150/170. In 1962, the first Gladiator was presented to the public and remained in production till 1988.

The Jeep Scrambler was manufactured in 1981-1986, the Comanche – in 1986-1992.

A little HMMWV

The Jeep Gladiator somewhat resembles a downsized HMMWV – a real brutal all-terrain Hummer for the army.

The Gladiator is based on the classic Wrangler, from which it inherited the front part and off-road features including the Command-Trac and Rock-Trac 4×4 systems, the third-generation Dana 44 axes, the Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, 32-inch off-road tires.

A Rubicon reinforced steel rear bumper and a steel front bumper ready for winch installation are standard. The new Gladiator can tow up to 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) and carry additional 606 lb (725 kg), when driving 4×4.

Classic pickup

Designers retained the legendary seven-slot grille that can be also seen on the Jeep Wrangler, but widened slots for additional air supply to better cool the engine when towing.

The grille’s upper part is gently tilted back to improve aerodynamics. The Gladiator has removable doors and a roof, the windshield can be folded down. Classics!

The Jeep Gladiator is 78.7 сm (2.6 ft) longer than the Wrangler, its wheelbase is 49.2 сm (1.6 ft) larger. The vehicle sits on a new lightweight high-strength steel frame.

The Gladiator Overland and Rubicon models offer LED headlamps and fog lights. There are traditional square taillights at the rear, also LED. The rear door is electrically driven and can be fixed in three positions.

Equipment

The interior of the Jeep Gladiator is similar to that of the Wrangler Rubicon. The equipment includes an off-road camera facing forward, as well as the fourth-generation UconnectTM system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a choice of 7.0 – or 8.4-inch scalable touchscreens.

In addition, a blind spot monitoring system, a direct collision warning, an adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function and a standard ParkView back-up camera with dynamic lines are available.

For more practicality, the camera offers a self-cleaning function that ensures that everything will be visible even after off-road rides.

The updated audio system has an additional subwoofer and a portable wireless speaker located behind the rear seat.

The most capable pickup truck ever

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is able to drive almost anywhere. The ground clearance is 28.2 cm (0.92 ft). Up to 76 cm (2.5 ft) of water fording.

It is not by chance that the model is being presented at the popular Camp Jeep event in Italy, in the Dolomites.

The Gladiator has modern economical engines. A 3.6-liter 285-hp Pentastar V6 with 256 lb-ft (347 Nm) of torque and the engine stop system (ESS) as standard enables acceleration to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.6 seconds.

A 3.0-liter 260-hp EcoDiesel V6 with 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) will be offered too for the European market. For all the models an 8-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Sales and prices

Sales in Europe will start by the end of 2020. Built in Toledo, Ohio, the new Jeep Gladiator is available in Sport, Overland and Rubicon trim levels.

The model will arrive to Middle East dealers in the first half of 2020.

The American prices are the following: $33,545 (Sport), $36,755 (Sport S), $40,395 (Overland), $43,545 (Rubicon), $60,815 (Launch Edition).
